Sinical Magazine: When were you born and where? Where are you currently located?
Miss Miranda: I’m based in London, where I was born and raised. Lately however I have been travelling over to the US on a regular basis for shoots and burlesque shows which has been fantastic.
Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in modeling?
Miss Miranda: I was spotted performing burlesque in London by the people at What Katie Did lingerie! They were my first modelling client about 7 years ago, and I’ve been working with them on a regular basis ever since. About 6 years ago I was asked to model in a catwalk show at London’s Torture Garden, and that’s how I got into fetish as well as retro style modelling.
Sinical Magazine: What was the first magazine you came across that made you want to become a model? If not a magazine, what inspired you?
Miss Miranda: I think Marquis was the first that really opened by eyes to the fetish world. I have always been fascinated by theatre, costume design and playing roles inspired by my own fantasies so when I discovered burlesque in 2003, it was the perfect outlet for me. After learning more about fetish through clubs like Torture Garden, I soon began to see modelling as an extension of the same creative impulse. I love the idea that a character I play in a shoot, expressed through costume, styling, set and lighting can be preserved forever in the images the photographer and I create.
Sinical Magazine: What do you think makes a model stand out from others?
Miss Miranda: Personality. A model can be physically perfect and impeccably dressed, but without character and personality their images will never be powerful or memorable. I have always seen modelling as a kind of performance, and I believe that being able to characterise oneself is the most important element.
Sinical Magazine: From a model’s perspective, what do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?
Miss Miranda: Following on from the previous question, I think characterisation. The ability to find the character that best suits the outfit, set and visual style of the image, and express it through facial expression, pose and body language. It’s a separate (though related) point, but I also think that while a model needs to show range, being able to have a distinct personal style that runs through their work is very important too.
Sinical Magazine: Clothing wise, what are your fetishes and why?
Miss Miranda: Fully fashioned stockings and extreme high heels. And legs in general. Like a true fetish, my love for them is visceral! I adore the feel of nylon on my legs, and the way fully fashioned stockings fit perfectly at the ankle and knee. The suggestive nature of the seams and keyhole, drawing the eye up and down the contours of leg so beautifully emphasised by the weave of the nylon. I particularly love to wear my stockings very long, so that the whole leg is covered just leaving a teasing nudity at the top, exaggerating the curvature of the behind... And then of course the heels. Now, I wouldn’t say that it’s feet in particular I’m attracted to - it’s feet as an extension of the leg, and in perfect extreme curvature born from a 6” heel elevation. That extreme arch seems simultaneously to create a look of muscular strength in the leg, and a fragile elegant femininity which, to me, is almost indescribably beautiful.
Sinical Magazine: What type of music do you listen to?
Miss Miranda: Top Three: Tom Waits, Nine Inch Nails, Jolie Holland. I also love classic jazz from the 30s and 40s - I perform my burlesque acts to this style of music a lot of the time.
Sinical Magazine: What is the alt/fetish scene like in your city?
Miss Miranda: Well, I think London is quite famous for its scene! Torture Garden is one of my favourite clubs in the whole world and I feel extremely honoured to have been chosen as one of their regular performers and poster girls. There are of course a huge number of burlesque clubs here as well, which is exciting but it has made the scene feel a little over-saturated in recent years. I’ve really enjoyed working at US burlesque clubs over the past year, in particular Bustout Burlesque in New Orleans which has an amazing vibe unlike anywhere in London at the moment. Performers dance to a fantastic live band there, making the experience incredible for dancers and audience alike!
Sinical Magazine: Besides modeling, what else do you like to do for fun?
Miss Miranda: I love cocktails and mixology - wherever I go in the world I always want to explore the best bars, and get to know amazing new people over incredible drinks! I also love to cook. A lot of the time when socialising I’ll have friends over to my place for home made cocktails and food. Exploring museums and galleries is something I really adore as well, and whenever I visit a new city that’s something I want to try to fit into my schedule. On my last trip to the US I went to an incredible collection of vintage Mardi Gras costumes in New Orleans, and an antique medical specimen collection in Philadelphia. Inspirations can come from anywhere so I always keep my mind stimulated in any way I can!
Sinical Magazine: What’s up next for you?
Miss Miranda: I have just been granted a long term US work VISA so am putting together a major modelling and performance tour of the US for 2014 - very excited!
