Interview: MADmoiselle Méli H

Lavina Lane Photography.

MADmoiselle Méli H is an alternative designer, model, and artist.

Sinical Magazine: When were you born and where? Where are you currently located?

MADmoiselle Méli: I was born in 1984 in Germany and at the moment I live in Paris/France.

Sinical Magazine: What was the first magazine that you came across that made you want to become a model? If not a magazine, what inspired you?

MADmoiselle Méli: I never wanted to become a model, because in the past I never felt like a model. As today, I see mee as artist of many talents and not really as model. It's only a part of my job. That doesn't mean I don't do it with passion. I love it to be in front of a camera, to act, to feel special. When I'm doing it, I'm totally in, but yeah: when I was 17 I was asked to model, and I did it. And it was like tasting blood. Since 2002 I started to become a alternative model in gothic/fantasy. Since 2009 I'm also into the neo-Victorian/steampunk modeling. Now I'm 30 and since 4 years I start to concentrate more into my design brand, which has also the name MADmoiselle Méli.

Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in pin-up/fetish modeling?

MADmoiselle Méli: I started modeling in 2002. But I do less pin-up in the traditional way, more into steampunk/victorian pin-up. And the only fetish is wearing a corset. My record was a 46cm (18,1") but I had to stop because of health problems.

Sinical Magazine: What do you think makes a model stand apart from others?

MADmoiselle Méli: Not only a beautiful face or a good body makes you a good model (I mean, look at me. I'm not fitting in the standart model-look, because I'm really curvy and I really hate sports.). You should have a lot of charisma.. And last but not least: Be a good actor but always stay yourself. That means: If you become a "role" in front of the camera, play it authentically, and try different facial expressions. And it's like in other kind of arts... If you find your own personal style, you should remain true to your style!

Sinical Magazine: From a modelís perspective, what do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?

MADmoiselle Méli: Good question. I'm always searching for the spirit and soul in things, also in photographs. I wanna see storytelling in a photo. I don't take care if it's artistic or an advertisement photograph. My opinion: If a image is technically superior but the motive is not, it's not going to be a good photo. Another important aspect for me for the photo to be good is the ability (of the photographer) to have a "special eye" for the right moment. Especially in portraits: Not every person looks good in the same position. You need to find the perfect angle for every single model.

Sinical Magazine: Clothing wise, what are your fetishes and why?

MADmoiselle Méli: I love corsets. I wear them now since 10 years and I can't imagine a life without them. They make me feel ladylike, sexy, like a goddess and let me travel into another time. I think that's the only fetish I have.

Sinical Magazine: What are your measurements?

MADmoiselle Méli: At the moment: 100cm-72cm-103cm (39.4"-28.3"-40.6").

Sinical Magazine: What is your shoe size?

MADmoiselle Méli: European 39 (uk 6, us 8,5).

Sinical Magazine: Besides modeling, what do you like to do for fun?

MADmoiselle Méli: Working. Yes I really do, because I'm designer (specialized in jewelry and gemstone design BA) and I have a creative mind. I have so many things to design, so I really, really enjoy my work. There is not enough time in the day to do all the things I want to do. Beside modeling, I sew, I draw, I sculp and I craft jewelry. I also love to travel and I have a passion for very old cemeteries. This is why my favprite place in Paris is the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Sinical Magazine: What type of music do you listen to?

MADmoiselle Méli: Black-/Doom-/Pagan-/Folk Metal, Neofolk.

Sinical Magazine: Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some of your favorite books? What book are you currently reading?

MADmoiselle Méli: My favorite authors ever are Alexandre Dumas, Stephan Lawhead, Jean-Christophe Grangé, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. To write down now all the books I love, would be outside the scope of this interview. But my favorite genre is the Victorian horror, history and fantasy books crossed with some crime is always good too. At the moment I am reading a Sherlock Holmes story written by Klaus-Peter Walter.

Sinical Magazine: Do you have any other upcoming projects you would like to mention?

MADmoiselle Méli: Yes, I work close with the designer Morrigan and we plannig a model competition. It starts on 11/06/14 and we are looking for a European alternative model (from size XS to XXXL) who will represent one of our outfits Morrigan and I will create together.
