Sinical Magazine: When were you born and where? Where are you currently located?
Courtney Crave: I was born in Naples, Italy on March 9th and raised in Germany. I currently live in Dallas but consider Heidelberg, Germany my home town.
Sinical Magazine: What was the first fetish/or alt. magazine that you came across that made you want to become a model? If not a magazine, what inspired you?
Courtney Crave: I was inspired by the images of who I consider the great original fetish models in the scene; Darenzia, Emily Marilyn, Ruby Luster, and of course Angela Ryan.
Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in alt modeling?
Courtney Crave: I was hanging out at a local Goth club 9 years ago and had a few photographers approach me about modeling. Some legit, some not so legit. I started as a bondage model. I met Angela and we became best friends really quickly and she introduced me to many key people in the scene. She would loan me wardrobe and recommend me to photographers, I really wouldn’t be here without her.
Sinical Magazine: What do you think makes a model stand apart from others?
Courtney Crave: Innovative posing and control/awareness of their bodies.
Sinical Magazine: From a model’s perspective, what do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?
Courtney Crave: I assess the entire photo from framing to lighting to styling to posing and facial expressions. From the perspective of a model, most would probably focus on how they appear in the photo.
Sinical Magazine: How do you think the alt/fetish modeling scene has evolved since you started?
Courtney Crave: It seems that now it’s easier to become a model. Social media and technology allows people to explore things and expose themselves in ways that you couldn’t really before. You used to have to pick up a copy of Marquis or Bizarre or Skin Two to see your favorite fetish/alt models and now all you have to do is type “alt model” into google and you’re inundated with images. The term “alt” seems to be used to refer to models who are modified in some way whether it be tattoos, piercings, funky hair, etc. when it used to just apply to models who were alternative in nature (not mainstream) but didn’t necessarily have any mods.
Sinical Magazine: Besides being a model, you also perform at fetish and burlesque events. What has inspired some of your routines?
Courtney Crave: My inspiration typically comes through music. I’ll hear a song that resonates with me in some way and I’ll create a routine based on the lyrics or message. For my “Love is Blindness” routine I perform the entire act blindfolded and for “Sympathy for the Devil” I crawl out of a coffin with 8-inch horns and do contortion work.
Sinical Magazine: Besides modeling and performing, what do you like to do for fun?
Courtney Crave: I’m an avid reader, primary of horror and sci-fi. If I’m not traveling I can typically be found doing yoga or pole fitness.
Sinical Magazine: What type of music do you listen to?
Courtney Crave: I have a very eclectic taste and listen to everything from The Rolling Stones to Abba to IAMX to The Cramps to Mozart. My current fave is Hozier.
Sinical Magazine: Do you have any upcoming projects or events you would like to mention?
Courtney Crave: I co-produce the Dallas Fetish Ball every year. This year it’s November 13-15. It’s one of the largest fetish events in Texas and we get some really great performers that come out. This year our headliner is crowd favorite Rubberdoll. I’m really excited for it. After that I’m off to New Zealand for a suspension event.
