Anita De Bauch is a London-based model. This interview/pictorial was featured in Sinical Nylons. Buy a print copy here.
Sinical Magazine: When were you born and where? Where are you currently located?
Anita De Bauch: I’m mostly located in London, although I’m looking to buy a house elsewhere soon! I’m all over the place, though. I was staying in a big country house in Somerset last week, now I’m back in London, next week I’m in Southeast Asia and after that I’m touring England and Wales. I was born in Cornwall and generally love the southwest of England. I might even move there permanently. I’d love to build my own house.
Sinical Magazine: What was the first magazine that you came across that made you want to become a model? If not a magazine, what inspired you?
Anita De Bauch: I expect everyone says this, but I used to read Bizarre magazine when I was a teenager, which introduced me to the idea of fetish and alternative models. I loved the idea of being a model, but I didn’t tell anyone as I thought they’d laugh. When I was 18, I started my first business and posed for my own catalogue photos to save money. It was really fun and inspired me to contact local photographers for test shoots for my own enjoyment, rather than the business. When I started getting regular paid job offers, I packed my bags, moved to London and became a full-time model. That was six years ago.
Sinical Magazine: How did you get started in pin-up/fetish modeling?
Anita De Bauch: I just started doing it for fun while I was at university, mostly with student photographers, who were happy to have someone to practice on. I was inspired by Bizarre magazine, Dita Von Teese and Perou.
Sinical Magazine: What do you think makes a model stand apart from others?
Anita De Bauch: You can tell when a model really knows her stuff. Every small detail of her photos looks better, which adds up to a big difference overall, and you’ll constantly be hearing from others how great she is. It’s difficult to achieve all this if your knowledge of the industry and the skill of modelling itself is incomplete, but once you have that information, there’s nothing stopping you, as long as you’re willing to work hard.
Sinical Magazine: From a model’s perspective, what do you think is the most important aspect of a photo?
Anita De Bauch: Whether or not it makes you look hot. I love photos where I appear beautiful and empowered in sumptuous surroundings. Who wouldn’t want a photo of themselves looking like that? If a photo flatters you, you’ll like it. Models always post photos online where they look taller, thinner and fresher-faced than they do in real life. That’ll be the way of it until some other ‘look’ becomes fashionable.
Sinical Magazine: What has been the most interesting thing to happen during one of your photo shoots?
Anita De Bauch: I think making photos and videos is pretty interesting. Light, pose, wardrobe, expression, hair, makeup, light, all those ways the team communicates itself to the viewer via that one split-second caputure, setting, camera angle, light, light and light. I love to be a photo detective and analyse every aspect of a photo and read as much into it as possible.
Sinical Magazine: Clothing-wise, what are your fetishes and why?
Anita De Bauch: It’s difficult to rationalize what you instinctively like, but I’ll try anyway... The first thing that springs to mind is ornate retro lingerie, especially fancy suspender belts, corsets, girdles and stockings. They feel pleasantly clingy on and alter the way you feel, walk and hold yourself. Playful Promises have sent me a lot of beautiful pieces. They are instantly feminizing and make you want to show off your lingerie to someone!
Like most women, I just adore a really shapely pair of high heels, but again, I’m fussy! For it to work for me, there has to be at least a 4” difference between the height of the heel and the height of the platform, to get the right angle in the arch of the foot; the heel has to be a nice smooth, shapely stiletto, and I favour a round toe, to make my feet look even cuter. You have to buy quality when you want super high heels, because your whole weight is being carried by them. I always tell people, if you have to choose between spending money on the bag or the shoes, spend it on the shoes! The best option of all, of course, is to have a professional who understand the beauty of fetish shoes to measure your feet and make bespoke shoes to your specifications. Fabulously Fetish in London have moulds of my feet in their workshop and build my shoes around them. I also model latex a lot during my everyday working life. Latex is such a cool fabric to make clothes from, and comfortable to wear, as long as it’s well-made. I’m currently designing my first collection with Lady Allura’s Latex, which is based around my experience of wearing latex- it will all feel enhancing, be elegant to get in and out of, and push the right bodyparts in the right direction! I can’t bear pulling latex on and off over my head, getting muffin-top, or having my boobs squished flat. The perfect latex outfit should make you look and feel like a slick, streamlined superheroine.
Sinical Magazine: The theme of this issue is nylons. What is the appeal of nylons to you?
Anita De Bauch: I was really happy you did a nylons issue. I think they have such enduring allure. I prefer the vintage fully fashioned nylon stockings with proper seam, welt and reinforced heel. There is a lot of Freudian symbolism there. They not only look great, but they feel lovely on as well, especially when you rub your legs together, or when someone else strokes your legs! They’re also rather naughtier than tights as they leave the skin above your stocking tops bare, and the suspender straps give your lover something extra to grab! I know that I’m not the only one who loves them because I sell so many of my old pairs through my website (anitadebauch.com). I receive fan mail about them and they’ve been trickling out of my online shop for years, but when I mentioned that I sell them in an interview, demand shot up so high that I can barely keep up. Nylon stocking fetish is huge and way more common than you might think. I love to send people little packages of happiness in the mail.
Sinical Magazine: What are your measurements?
Anita De Bauch: 34A - 25 - 37. I’m working to knock an inch off my waist and hips. Wish me luck.
Sinical Magazine: What is your shoe size?
Anita De Bauch: 6.5.
Sinical Magazine: What type of music do you listen to?
Anita De Bauch: At the moment, I can’t stop watching Throbbing Gristle perform that ‘We Need Some Discipline in Here’ thing. Actually, I think it’s just called ‘Discipline’. It’s on YouTube, anyway. It’s more performance art than music, but wow, it’s so freeing to watch, almost meditative.
Sinical Magazine: What are some of your favorite books and who are some of your favorite authors? And what are you currently reading?
Anita De Bauch: I’m currently reading an incredibly dense book about reincarnation. I’m not even sure why. It’s the size of a phone book, and very academic. I like to read non-fiction about topics I’m interested in, like art, magic, the Golden Age of Hollywood, fetish and psychology. I like reading inspiring rags-to-riches biographies about women I admire, like Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe. There are almost zero books about freelance modelling out there, or I’d be reading them, too. As it is, I’ve been researching everything surrounding it for nearly a decade.
Sinical Magazine: Can you talk about your book project, The “Ugly” Girl’s Guide to Modelling?
Anita De Bauch: The “Ugly” Girl’s Guide to Modelling is my five-step guide to being the most successful freelance model you can be, based on my experience of being a full-time freelance model. It also contains guest contributions from fellow top freelance model, Roswell Ivory, and my personal nutrtionist, Juliette Scarfe of Bareskin Beauty, sharing her secrets! The title is a satire on the idea that if you get rejected by model agencies, you’re too “ugly” to model- it isn’t true, and I’m the proof! The book is a game-changer for all models who get their own work, whether finding their feet in the industry, or seasoned professionals looking to up their game and increase their profits.
Sinical Magazine: Besides modeling, what do you like to do for fun?
Anita De Bauch: Depending on where I am, I like to visit art galleries and museums, or go hiking in the countryside. I recently got my first convertible, an Alfa Romeo Spyder, and really enjoyed driving that around this summer. It gave me the perfect excuse to wear my Hermès silk scarves, big retro sunglasses, and leather driving gloves!
I stay in contact with my friends on the phone and online more than anything else, as we are always modelling in different places at different times, so it’s difficult to synchronise our schedules enough so that we can meet up. When we do, we tend to have dinner together, go for cocktails or just stay home with pizza or sushi. It’s great when we get booked for the same job, which happens quite a lot with fashion shows.
Sinical Magazine: Do you have any upcoming projects you would like to mention?
Anita De Bauch: I will be opening a very personal and intimate members’ area on anitadebauch.com when I have created enough content that I love enough to share. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but it will be more than just fetish videos and photo sets- although there will be plenty of those, naturally, all of which I will style in my own unique way, as well as star in! I want to do as much as I can to connect in a genuine, personal way with members, men and women, whatever their sexuality and budget, whether they want to see my exclusive fetish content, get modelling or beauty advice, or simply join an exclusive club they can access anytime they have an internet connection for a little escape from the outside world- under whatever name they like. Anitadebauch.com will be opening its books for members in 2015, and everyone is welcome. To stay updated, please subscribe to my blog: anitadebauch.blogspot.com.
